Physical Properties:White or off-white powder, odorless, hygroscopic. Freely soluble in water, sparingly soluble in ethanol, practically insoluble in acetone or ether. Aqueous solutions are relatively stable at pH 2–6, less stable under alkaline conditions, and readily inactivated by strong acids, strong bases, and oxidizing agents. The pH of a 1% aqueous solution is 4.0–6.0.
Uses:Polymyxin B is a polypeptide antibiotic with potent bactericidal activity against a wide range of Gram-negative bacilli, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. Clinically, it is mainly used for the treatment of septicemia, urinary tract infections, pulmonary infections, and skin/mucosal infections caused by susceptible organisms, and may also be applied topically to wounds and respiratory tract infections. This product is primarily intended for human use, while polymyxin E is mostly used in veterinary medicine.
