Physical Properties:White to off-white powder, slightly bitter, hygroscopic. Molecular weight approximately 1300 (as polymyxin B1 sulfate). Freely soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol, insoluble in ether, chloroform and acetone. The pH of a 1% aqueous solution is 5.0–7.5. Stable to heat, but unstable under strong acidic or alkaline conditions.
Uses:Used for the treatment of infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other Gram-negative bacilli, such as burn wound infections, septicemia, and urinary tract infections. Also used as a selective antibacterial agent in cell culture media to inhibit Gram-negative bacteria. It binds to lipopolysaccharides on the bacterial cell membrane, disrupting membrane integrity and exerting bactericidal effects.
