Easily soluble in hot water, methanol, ethanol and acetone; slightly soluble in water and ether; almost insoluble in benzene, chloroform and petroleum ether. Melting point 251-252°C (decomposes), relative density 1.694.
Uses:Pharmaceutical excipient used as chelating agent and antioxidant. It is also used as an antioxidant, free radical scavenger and synthetic intermediate in pharmaceutical, chemical and food industries.
Technical Specifications:
Appearance: white or pale yellow crystalline powder or crystals, odorless.
Solubility: easily soluble in hot water, methanol, ethanol and acetone; slightly soluble in water and ether; almost insoluble in benzene, chloroform and petroleum ether.
Acidity: pH of 0.10 g dissolved in 100 ml water is 3.0-3.8.
Assay: determined by HPLC with octadecylsilane bonded silica as filler, 0.05% phosphoric acid solution-methanol (93:7) as mobile phase, detection wavelength 271 nm, theoretical plate number not less than 4000 calculated for gallic acid peak.
Loss on drying: not more than 10.0% after drying at 105°C to constant weight; residue on ignition not more than 0.1%; heavy metals not more than 10 ppm.
