Physical Properties:Colorless crystals or white powder, hygroscopic, absorbs carbon dioxide from air to form carbonate, and can lose seven molecules of crystal water in dry air. Readily soluble in hot water and acids, soluble in ammonium chloride solution, and slightly soluble in cold water. Density 1.9 g/cm³, melting point 375°C, boiling point 710°C (decomposition). It is a strong base with general alkali properties, with alkalinity between calcium hydroxide and barium hydroxide, fully dissociating in water and corrosive.
Uses:Strontium hydroxide is widely used in Europe for the refining of beet sugar, forming an insoluble disaccharide salt that, after separation and refining, releases sugar upon treatment with carbon dioxide while producing insoluble strontium carbonate. It is also used as a stabilizer for polyethylene plastics, in the production of various strontium salts and strontium lubricating waxes, and to improve the drying properties of drying oils and paints.
