Physical Properties:White to slightly yellow crystalline or waxy solid with a slight characteristic odor; insoluble in water. Melting range 48-63°C, boiling point 264-270°C (97709 Pa), flash point >230°F. It may turn yellowish-brown upon long-term storage. 3-BHA has 1.5-2 times the antioxidant effect of 2-BHA, and the combination shows synergistic activity; however, antioxidant efficacy decreases when the dosage exceeds 0.02%.
Uses:Used as an oil-soluble antioxidant widely added to edible oils, fried foods, biscuits, instant noodles, quick-cooking rice, canned nuts, dried fish products, and cured meat products, with a maximum usage of 0.2 g/kg (based on fat content). It is also used as a feed additive and gasoline additive. BHA reacts with peroxides generated during oil oxidation, interrupting the auto-oxidation chain reaction. Its antioxidant effect is significantly enhanced when combined with other antioxidants or synergists such as citric acid, and it also exhibits certain antibacterial and antifungal properties.
