It readily deliquesces and carbonates in air, while slowly oxidizing to sodium thiosulfate, sodium sulfite, sodium sulfate and polysulfides, releasing hydrogen sulfide gas continuously. Industrial product appears pink, reddish-brown or earthy yellow due to impurities. Relative density (water = 1) is 1.86; melting point of anhydrous form is about 1180°C.
Uses:Used in the dye industry for manufacturing sulfur dyes, sulfur black, sulfur blue, and as a reducing agent and mordant for dye intermediates. In nonferrous metallurgy it is used as a flotation agent for ores. It serves as a depilatory agent for raw hides in the leather industry and as a cooking agent for paper in the papermaking industry. It is also widely used in the production of sodium thiosulfate, polysulfides, sodium hydrosulfide, and in textile, pigment, and rubber industries.
