Physical Properties:White crystalline solid with a slight characteristic odor. Freely soluble in water, ethanol, acetone, ethyl acetate, chloroform and ether. Slightly hygroscopic, slowly oxidized in air. Melting point approximately 42~43°C, sublimes at 37°C under 0.67 Pa.
Uses:Common reducing agent with antioxidant properties. Used to protect thiol groups in proteins and for cleavage and sequence analysis of protein disulfide bonds. Similar to 2-mercaptoethanol in function but with much less odor and lower toxicity, and is effective at 7-fold lower concentration.
