Physical Properties:White crystalline powder, density 1.46 g/cm³, slightly softer than KDP, brittle, with little cleavage. Easily soluble in water, slightly soluble in alcohol, ether and acetone, insoluble in benzene, butanone and chloroform. The monohydrate melts at 97 °C, loses water at 120 °C, undergoes crystal transformation at 230 °C; the anhydrous form melts at 270 °C and decomposes into lithium carbonate, carbon and water at 320 °C. Transparency range is 0.25–1.2 μm with transmittance near 90%.
Uses:Lithium formate crystals exhibit high nonlinear optical coefficients, high laser damage threshold, and a wide transparency range extending to the ultraviolet. They can realize third and fourth harmonic generation for 1.06 μm Nd:YAG laser radiation, making them excellent nonlinear optical crystal materials. They are also commonly used in battery manufacturing.
