Physical Properties:Colorless volatile fuming liquid with a pungent odor similar to acetic acid, hygroscopic and strongly corrosive. Melting point -15.2°C, boiling point 72.4°C, density 1.5351 g/cm³ (1°C). Miscible with water, fluorinated hydrocarbons, methanol, ethanol, diethyl ether, acetone, benzene, carbon tetrachloride, and hexane; partially soluble in carbon disulfide and higher alkanes. Due to the strong electron-withdrawing effect of the trifluoromethyl group, its acidity is about 100,000 times stronger than acetic acid.
Uses:Used as a key synthetic intermediate in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and dyes containing fluorine, as well as an excellent solvent for proteins and polyesters and a versatile organic reaction solvent.
