Physical Properties:Colorless to slightly brown oily liquid with an ether-like odor. Relative density (d204) 1.3322, melting point approx. -31.8 °C, boiling point approx. 188 °C (decomposes), refractive index (n20D) 1.3874, flash point 83 °C, autoignition temperature approx. 187.78 °C. Solubility in water approx. 2.8 g/100 mL at 18 °C; hydrolysis is slow in cold water and rapid at 50 °C or in alkaline solution, producing sulfuric acid and methanol. Soluble in ethanol, diethyl ether, dioxane, acetone and aromatic hydrocarbons; slightly soluble in carbon disulfide and aliphatic hydrocarbons. Moderately toxic, corrosive, and a possible carcinogen.
Uses:Used in the manufacture of dyes and as a methylating agent for amines and alcohols. It is also used as a methyl-substituting reagent and solvent in organic synthesis, and as an analytical reagent for determination of coal tar substances.
