Freely soluble in water forming an alkaline solution; slightly soluble in ethanol; insoluble in liquid ammonia. Readily effloresces in air and oxidizes to sodium sulfate. Decomposes with acids releasing sulfur dioxide; strong reducing agent. Molecular weight 126.04.
Uses:Primarily used as a reducing agent, bleaching agent and developer. It is applied in pulp bleaching in the paper industry, dechlorination and oxygen removal in water treatment, reduction in chemical synthesis, as well as photographic development, food preservation and antioxidant applications.
