Physical Properties:Lustrous colorless or white crystals, orthorhombic system, darkens on exposure to light, with a sour astringent taste. Not hygroscopic, but very soluble in water, soluble in sulfuric acid, insoluble in acetic acid, absolute ethanol, ether, chloroform, and carbon disulfide. The aqueous solution of iodic acid is a strong oxidizing agent; it can oxidize ferrous salts to ferric salts with the liberation of free iodine, and can oxidize organic substances in acidic media. In alkaline media, its oxidizing power is weakened.
Uses:Used as an analytical reagent and oxidizing agent for preparing iodates, pharmaceuticals, and disinfectants; also used as an oxidant in organic synthesis and for the determination of certain metal ions in chemical analysis.
