Physical Properties:Colorless to pale yellow viscous liquid, viscosity increases with increasing degree of polymerization, may appear as glassy solid; no definite boiling point, gradually decomposes into phosphoric acid and phosphorus pentoxide when heated above 300°C; density about 2.1 g/cm³ (25°C); hygroscopic, miscible with water and ethanol in any proportion, releases a large amount of heat upon dissolution. Possesses strong acidity and dehydration-condensation ability, much stronger acidity than ordinary phosphoric acid, and can serve as a proton acid catalyst.
Uses:Used as a key catalyst in organic synthesis to promote cyclization, rearrangement, dehydration, acylation and other reactions, for synthesizing heterocyclic compounds (e.g., quinoline, pyrrole), fragrance intermediates and drug active molecules; in the field of polymer materials, used to prepare flame retardants (e.g., ammonium polyphosphate) and ion exchange resins, improving flame retardancy and ion adsorption capacity; also used in petrochemical industry for lubricating oil refining and metal surface treatment (removal of oxide layers).
