Physical Properties:Funoran is a polysaccharide gum extracted from red algae of the genus Gloiopeltis (G. furcata and G. tenax). It appears as a light yellow to yellowish-brown powder, soluble in hot water to form a viscous colloidal solution, and insoluble in ethanol and other organic solvents. It has strong resistance to drying, and its aqueous solution exhibits high viscosity (about 17 mPa·s for the original gum, which can be reduced to about 2 mPa·s after processing).
Uses:According to GB 2760-2007, it is approved as a thickening agent in gum-based candies at a maximum usage of 10.0 g/kg. It is also used in the textile industry for producing 'Xiangyunsha' fabric, in the printing and dyeing industry, and as a food and pharmaceutical material. When combined with dicalcium phosphate and xylitol, it helps protect tooth enamel in xylitol chewing gum.
